Analysis and Prevention of Bicycle Tire Blowout

Sports bikes often have tire blowouts when going out for activities, which often gives others the misconception that the bike is not sturdy enough. Actually, it's just a matter of probability. Because the distance traveled by a sports bike is several times that of a regular bike in the same amount of time, the probability increases several times for this reason alone. In addition, because the main activity range of sports bicycles is in the suburbs, the roads in the suburbs are not cleaned by dedicated personnel like those in the city, so there are more foreign objects.

There is also a misconception that many people believe thinner tires are more prone to bursting. Actually, the thinner the tire, the higher the tire pressure, and the higher the tire pressure, the less likely it is to burst.

Scenario 1: Pierce from outside

Preventive measures:

1. When inflating, make sure to inflate the air sufficiently. If there is an air cylinder with a pressure gauge, please inflate it close to the pressure number indicated on the outer tire. If there is no pressure gauge, feel it with your fingers. Generally speaking, road bikes need to be hit until the outer tire cannot be easily pinched with fingers (by a man's hand). The mountain bike can still be pinched to knock it down, but it feels very, very hard when pinched. The benefits of high tire pressure are obvious. When the tire becomes hard, many sharp stones, broken glass, and other objects will bounce off and cannot penetrate. Greatly reduces the chance of being stabbed.

2. When parking and resting, pay attention to checking the outer tire to see if there are any broken glass, small iron pieces, stones, or other debris embedded in the outer tire, and clean it up in advance. These things may not puncture for a while, but the speed and distance of cycling will make them go deeper and deeper until they puncture the inner tube.

3. When riding a bike, you should look at the road and avoid suspicious things on the surface. Also, try to walk as close to the middle of the road as possible, as there are usually glass and iron sheets along the roadside.

Scenario 2: Broken by stones or steps

The only reason for this situation is insufficient tire pressure, so the tires are too soft and do not have enough support when they come into contact with hard objects, resulting in the inner tube being pushed towards the rim and breaking on it.

Preventive measures: Be full of energy and pay more attention to the road.

Scenario 3: Burst from the inside

This situation is usually due to issues with the tire pad. One reason is that the tire pad cannot withstand high pressure, causing excessive inward deformation and even rupture, resulting in the inner tube bursting inward. The second issue is that the tire pad was not properly padded and moved, causing the holes on the rim to come into direct contact with the inner tube and burst under high pressure.

Preventive measures: Choose tire pads that can withstand high pressure. If the tire pad is narrow and easy to slide, first wrap the inside of the car rim with something like 3M tape to cover all the holes. And it can increase the friction of the tire pad, reducing the possibility of sliding.

Scenario 4: Slow Breath

This situation is usually a quality issue with the inner tube. Before installing the inner tube, it is necessary to inflate and check it in advance. The spare tire carried with you when going out should also be checked in advance. Especially for domestic tires, be extra careful.

Slow exhalation usually occurs at the nozzle, which is a key area to check.

In addition to the above situation, there is also a situation where after a tire blowout, the inner tube is just replaced, but it is soon discovered to be leaking.

There are two possibilities, one is that the thing that punctured the inner tube is still left on the outer tire.

Preventive measures: When repairing a tire, carefully inspect the outer tire, and use your hand to carefully mold the inner side of the broken tire to confirm that there are no foreign objects.

Another possibility is that the tire pry bar broke the inner tube when installing the outer tire. Preventive methods, practice tire changing techniques diligently.
